FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 10, 2011

Rentiesville Dusk til Dawn Blues Festival  - 21st Annual!
Oklahoma Blues Hall of Fame   Friends of Rentiesville Blues Inc.
www.dcminnerblues.com

Sept 2, 3, 4; 5 pm til 5 am, advance tickets $10/night or $15 at the gate – old enough to party!

     30 bands on 3 stages, 5 pm – 5 am $15/day, kids free, Sept 2, 3, 4

“Hey Everybody! Tell Everybody!...” that in Oklahoma, hidden out in the woods is a little old juke joint called the Down Home Blues Club, It’s authentic, funky, and very much alive.
It’s been there since Oklahoma Bluesman D.C. Minner’s grandmother Lura opened up a bootleg corn whiskey bar  in 1936. Now, however, the bootleg whiskey is gone. You can get a cold beer or a soda, and sometimes people bring potluck, but it’s all about the music. The club hosts a free jam session party every Sunday, musicians show up with cases, and the years roll back. Part of the magic is in the music played there, but the room itself has a grittiness and  authenticity both palpable and intoxicating. It is rural and real in a sense that other venues fail to capture. For those who long to feel the power of the Blues, try Rentiesville. For the full effect, mark your calendar for Labor Day Weekend and come to the 21st Annual Dusk  til Dawn Blues Festival – Sept 2, 3, and 4th – 200 musicians from across the US - 30 bands on three stages, indoors and out!  … created by D.C.  himself and presented by Selby Minner and the Friends of Rentiesville Blues Inc., even the old cotton field out back will ring with the blues
!!! Kids are free, we keep them busy. The High School Jazz Band will come in courtesy of Jim Davis. And there is a Gospel Show to start the Festivities on Sunday.  The outdoor part is the most family friendly Blues festival you will find. But adults only in the juke joint, please. That part of the show goes on until 5 am!

HEADLINERS INCLUDE:

Trampled Under Foot- IBC Winners, family Band, the sister plays bass and sings!

Jimmy ‘Preacher’  Ellis – up from Dallas, everyone loves Preacher

Berry Harris – from Stringtown and Wichita… a life in the blues

Johnny Rawls – won Soul/blues artist of the year in Memphis … all 3 nites. Always gets 'em up and dancing!

Peter Karp and Sue Foley – just back from Germany – great guitarists and in love, too!

Eugene Hideaway Bridges – a powerhouse from New Orleans and Austraila, he travels the world.
Lightnin’ Malcolm and Cameron Kimbrough – Lightnin back w another MS powerhouse drummer
Randy McAllister – tore em up here in 2009 – you may remember the barefoot drummer in the club from Texas and his trio.

The subtitle “Homecomings and Reunions” is because the fest functions as a
reunion on many levels, from fans to volunteers to players. This will bring in Wanda Watson,
Cecil Gray and Blue Fire Foley, Roger Hurricane Wilson, Dues Paid, Harry and Debbie
       Blackwell
(CA). . . It also means the Oklahoma Blues Hall of Famers will grace the stage
in abundance this year in Rentiesville. At least 10, including  Jimmy ‘Preacher’ Ellis (TX),
      Leon Rollerson
, Berry Harris (KS), Rudy Scott, Harry Williams, Chuck Blackwell,
Roland Bowling, Little Miss PeggyLem Sheppard (KS), and Selby Minner herself.

Also, NEW is Jesse Dean (Winslow, AR) and new between sets on the main stage will be
Rich Berry (Kansas City, slide and vocals).
      The Kid’s Village
(“children under 12 are free and we keep them busy!” Marsha Whalen
reports) will rock to the conga drums once again with Jahruba and his drum circles. He is
       an OK State Arts
Council roster artist and their funding through a series of grants has helped keep the festival
alive over these 21 years. Kid’s Village would not be complete without Joann McMillan and her stick puppets
(which require lots of little hands to make them dance across the field) and Domenica Lovera will be back with
crafts and face painting as well as Patrick Duffy and a legitimate excuse to get dirty – the pottery wheel!

Rentiesville is…: 15 miles S of Muskogee, 125 miles E of OKC, 4 Hours N of Dallas or less and 1 hour SE of Tulsa
      . . . From I – 40 North up US 69, second exit at Checotah/Rentiesville and
. . . South from Muskogee,  down US 69, second exit at Oktah/Rentiesville
Info (918)855-0978

Musical Notes
~by Susan Herndon

"I don't care
What you say about me
Just so you say it."

~Woody Guthrie, 1948

the blues muse

Selby Minner, singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalist and blues warrior, says she has no method to songwriting, but she does have one beautiful and simple rule that she follows:  "If I get an idea, I get up and write it down."   She says she's very faithful to it--  "it's a commitment; whenever the Muse strikes-- wait on it hand and foot."   She also has a theory about the music... "it's a living thing, it wants to be played.  For it to stay alive, it must be taught and learned and played and performed.  It's an act of service."  And so, she has lived her life by this code, following the Muse.

Born and raised in East Providence, Rhode Island, Selby was going to art school at the Rhode Island School of Design when she had a life changing experience.  Janis Joplin came to the school, along with her band, Big Brother.  "They put on a four hour concert and it blew my mind," she says.   "She had all her hits"...  Selby was eighteen years old and from that moment on, became a singer, "following guitar players around and singing in coffeehouses."

She and guitarist, Jim Donovan, started a duo called, Home Cookin, made their way playing gigs across the U.S. and it was he who encouraged her to play guitar, she also gives him credit for teaching her to play slide guitar.   The duo eventually broke up, and Selby, in Berkley, California, began playing solo guitar and vocal, but she was wanting to play electric blues.   She had bought a bass guitar, and she abandoned the acoustic folk-blues she'd been playing.  It was around this time that she met D.C. Minner.  D.C. had just switched from bass to electric; so Selby became his bass player.  They also became husband and wife.  And, together they traveled the country, the whole world even, playing four nights a week, dedicated to that Blues Muse, as a group called Blues on the Move

"I switched back to guitar about four years before D.C. passed."  D.C. Minner, Selby's husband of 28 years, legendary blues man and Oklahoma Jazz Music Hall of Fame inductee, passed away one year ago on May 6.

Together, they not only created a lot of great music, but have put Rentiesville, Oklahoma on the musical map.  In '91 they founded the Dusk til Dawn Blues Festival, a favorite three-day celebration, held every Labor Day weekend.    They also established  the Down Home Blues Club in 1988, hosting regular jam sessions.  And they developed the Oklahoma Blues Hall of Fame.  As Artists in Residence with the  Oklahoma Arts and Humanities Council, they have promoted the Blues Muse, teaching in the schools-- work that Selby will continue in the upcoming 8-10 weeks.  And Selby, herself, has even written a book, The Band Guide, which includes everything D. C. taught her...  with invaluable information about being in a band.

The Down Home Blues Club, usually open one night a month, will be open six nights a month this June.  The first Friday, June 5th, will be an all ages, open mic coffee house.  Saturday, the 6th, she'll be playing there with her band, and every Sunday from 2 pm to 2 am there will be an open jam throughout summer.

With a new CD called, Take One, coming out in about 2-3 weeks, Selby says, "I just really love the Blues... the minor sound, the rhythm, and the stories.  It gives you permission to live life and to enjoy it... it's about living life and about surviving."  Selby is definitely a survivor, committed to the Muse and dedicated to the Blues.

Fortunately, Selby likes playing in Okemah and notes how supportive of the music everyone here is.  She will be at Okemah's Blues and Jazz Festival at the Grape Ranch this Saturday at 2 p.m.  And will be at Grape Ranch again on Saturday, June 27th for the weekend singer/songwriter series.  She also plays on occasion at the Brickstreet Cafe, so ask Luna when she might be there again!
