through playing the music itself. The Blues is party music - people who work hard need to have fun once in a while, and the blues is custom designed for this purpose, (among others, - like expressing yourself, dancing...)

The Blues presented at Rentiesville run the gamut from young guns who rely on ‘fire’ to get over straight through to the old timers of the genre who roar or finesse their way through the blues…  and every stripe in between. True blues, and a few derivations.

So who will be playing??                               . . . The MUSICIANS . . .

Headliners here from across the US and abroad (!):

  • Nothing Wrong With Vernon!
    author: www.bluescritic.com

It's ludicrous that such a talented singer like Vernon Garrett hasn't gotten more attention. This is well-produced soul/blues/R & B- full of gutsy singing and catchy hooks. Vernon tackles the famous title track with confidence, as he does with "If You Don't Know Me By Now". Both these songs are duets with Brenda Lee Eager. She sounded so good I searched the Net for a cd of hers and couldn't find one! A Shame I tell ya! There's an update of "Crossroads 2002", which would sound great on the radio and would be a hit in a better world. Same goes for the fabulous opener "My Trial Of Love". Soul/Blues fans of Little Milton, Z.Z. Hill, Artie "Blues Boy" White and Johnnie Taylor will dig this album.

Tony Mathews Hollywood - Selby says "Tony is a life long friend of D.C.'s and the most serious student of the guitar I have ever known personally." Tony toured the world with Ray Charles for 18 years and worked sessions for Capitol records and also toured with Little Richard.

LEON BLUE Las Vegas - plays in Europe several times a year and hails from Las Vegas. he will be all over the Festival sitting in with his cheery blues piano

Regionals from 4 states:

Berry Harris is a trouper who has personally kept the Blues alive in Wichita for many years.. Inducted into our OK Blues Hall of Fame, he says " the longer I play the better I feel.. I just do not want to stop!".

BACKUP BLUES BAND
Comes in from Dallas - a seasoned group of musicians with a tight funky fun band.

JIMMY the Preacher ELLIS has lived in Seattle and Arkansas and Texas and Tulsa. One of this year's inductees into the OK Blues Hall of Fame here in Rentiesville. throaty vocals, harmonica and guitar - lots of fun and real blues.

Harry and Debbie Blackwell - the best in Hipppy Blues from Mt. Shasta

Clarence King jazz sax will be at the High School in Checotah with a workshop and then play with the Jazz Band on the first Set outdoors Saturday nite.

The area's best:

Pure Silk a really high quality outfit from Tulsa. Together since 1975 or before...a family R&B Blues sound......Walter Watson is one of the areas best drummers and they have opened for Lowell Fulsom, Little Milton, Albert King and Bobby Blues Bland.

Pat Moss hails from Tahlequah with his Native blues - slide, harmonica. His hit song is Bar room preacher and he sure rocks on Wang Dang Doodle...

Roland Bowling loves to perform for veterans and bikers. He is a big man with a great guitar style, lots of originals and a sweet and capable - and cute - wife on the bass. OKC metro is his stomping grounds. He also hosts KXRO's Sunday Night Blues Cruise.

Sunshine is sweet and serious about the guitar.   A lovely smile and she has a way with a song.

Jahruba will run drum circles throughout the event for the kids...He can make any kid sound great in 20 minutes!!

Domenica Lovera paints hunrdeds of faces

Joann McMillan brings the costumes and puppets which the kids love.

Dues
Miss Blues here every year and not to be missed. Tours the midwest circuit and is a hit every where she sings. Texas shout style...true traditional blues with bite!

Young players in their teens - good, too - Sat Nite:

Checotah HS Jazz Band Mr Jim Davis will again bring the award winning local High School Jazz Band.

Blue Fire Foley slide guitar from a thirteen year old and he can really wail on the deep blues. great stage presence.

Jonathan Fox on fire guitarist from the Texas panhandle Jonathan again will grace the kid's stage Saturday nite.

Perry Thomas 23 and from Muskogee, this young man who is blind is maturing into an effective bandleader.

Andrew 'To-low 16' Miller - New this year D.C. found this young man doing a residency in OKC when Andrew was in the second grade - and could play blues guitar. D.C. hired him and paid him his first $50 to play the Moore Fireworks show.. Andrew is now 16 and tears the guitar up....lyrical and versatile. His band of Brothers includes Mathew, 18, on bass and Kevin Miller, 14 on traps. Check them ou, a must-see.

 Gospel Show Sun:
Rev Tony Wise, (Dallas and OKC) and his father John Wise are D.C.'s cousins and have been singing gospel their entire lives.

“The nicest group of people you would ever want to meet” is the quote from the survey Selby likes the best – “that says it all”, she says. “My favorite thing about this music is the people who play it and the people who love it…it makes for a great party…everybody is here, and smiles all around.” it is at DC’s birthplace on the family farm turned festival site… low key, time worn… cool in the evenings…fun!

“Everything about Dusk Til Dawn is a ‘family’ affair.  The Minners are still very dedicated and integral to the show, taking the lead role in organizing and presenting the event. They perform as well.  Their extended ‘family’ includes 12 Board Members, over 100 volunteers, and thousands of dedicated fans.  Many of these folks have been returning each year since the very beginning (1991).
Vendors sell t-shirts, jewelry, barbeque, fried fish, candy, ice cream, and even ‘fried pies.’  The Kid’s Village sprouts up around an old school bus. Kids stay busy with Face painting, costumes, ‘dragons’ (a la Chinese New Year’s parades), clay pottery, and puppet shows,  made lovingly available by a group of exceptional volunteers.  These are all hands-on activities, keeping young minds occupied while the hypnotic sounds of blues slowly soak into the young minds that will be the future of the blues.  This Kid’s Village is unlike anything we’ve seen before!!!”  But - indoors after-hours in the juke joint is adults

As Donna Pearce recently reported in the McIntosh County Democrat out of Checotah, "This year's Dusk til Dawn Blues Festival at Rentiesville won't be quite the same with D.C. Minner gone, but his influence on others will no doubt be reflected in every note played and every lyric sung.

"The festival, scheduled for August 29 - 31, will be a tribute to it's founder.
...The music legacy D.C. left for us will be remembered and put into play ...Selby, D.C.'s bassist for 30 years, will continue his work as lead guitarist and will keep the festival alive with the help of the non-profit they founded, Friends of Rentiesville (F.O.R.) Blues Inc."

Besides more music than ever several of the bands will cover some of Minner's originals keeping the Rentiesville Blues Alive in the best way possible - through playing the music itself.

D.C. never did think a 'moment of silence' was the thing to do at a party....Just more music than ever - Selby reports "We have really over-booked the event this year" That translates into more music for you at the same incredible price of $15 per night ...which would be impossible without the support of over a hundred volunteers and the  Oklahoma Arts Council grant as well as support from Budweiser and the Very Special Artists VSA non-profit (kin to Very Special Atheletes, both founded by the Kennedys).  Also Budweiser, the Phoenix and many others. It is a community built around loving music.. we welcome you to come have fun with us. And bring the kids if you like. They will be giving away harmonicas and showing how to play them in the Kid's Village (which runs all three nights) on Saturday.

So who will be playing??                               . . . The MUSICIANS . . .

Headliners here from across the US and abroad (!):

Guitar Shorty from CA  and TX will headline Saturday night... when he was married to Jimi Hendrix's sister Jimi used to sneak into the clubs to steal a few of Shorty's licks...powerful and versatile blues guitar, a world renowned recording artist.. he has played with Little Richard, former members of the Eagles and Steely Danas well as Big Joe Turner. He got his start professionally when he won a six month battle of the guitarists contest in Los Angeles and has not looked back.

Andrew Jr Boy Jones TX -was a good enough guitarist to play in Freddie King's band as a teenager and has been growing ever since...catch him now before we can't afford him at all!

Johnny 'Mr. Romance' Rawls MS and NM - headlines Friday with his dance-able set. Worked with OV Wright and Little Johnny Taylor...many record companies and now self produces.

Tony Mathews Hollywood - Selby says "Tony is a life long friend of D.C.'s and the most serious student of the guitar I have ever known personally." Tony toured the world with Ray Charles for 18 years and worked sessions for Capitol records and also toured with Little Richard.

Tommy McCracken Chicago -arrived singing. Grew up singing in church. He  is a showman in the vaudeville tradition and a "natural entertainer who goes with the moment. His show offers a disarming mix of reverence and ego as he rips through a blues cannon that touches on hits from B.B. King to Z.Z. Hill" - Steve Dollar, The Atlanta Constitution.  - here straight from Buddy Guy's Legends Chicago. He's toured 40 states and played in 4 foreign countries.

LEON BLUE Las Vegas - plays in Europe several times a year and hails from Las Vegas. he will be all over the Festival sitting in with his cheery blues piano

JAMES PETERSON Florida - People always ask "Is the old man coming back this year (from Florida)?" Of course the answer is always yes. He wraps up the outdoor stage Sat and Sun and then proceeds to come indoors and sell CDs from the stage in the middle of songs! Inimitable.

HARPER and his unique style of Aboriginal Blues. Didgeridoo and harmonica; he actually grew up in Australia and is very hot on the festival touring circuit this summer. has  won countless awards, is signed with Blind Pig and the newest release is "Day By Day" A friendly and humorous story teller
